This weekend is a big one for eight teamsfrom both sides of the Shannon as the semi-finals of the Westmeath and Roscommon SFC are down for decision. On the Leinster side Garrycastle and Mullingar Shamrocks will be many people’s idea of the most likely candidates to progress to the county final at the expense of Killucan and The Downs respectively. Across the bridge St Faithleach’s and Elphin will be hoping to upset the odds against their fancied opponents St Brigid’s and Castlerea.

Athlone were hoping to bridge a seven year gap by reaching the semi-final but came up against an ever improving Killucan outfit that had other ideas. Killucan had flagged their form with a 10 point win over Maryland in the previous round and after kicking 1-18 in this game they have to be seen as genuine title contenders.

Westmeath hurlers have plenty to feel proud about this week having captured their third Christy Ring Cup, this time at the expense of a luckless Kerry. While winning this second tier competition is in itself something to celebrate the main prize on offer is a three year ticket to compete for the Liam McCarthy.
